Reciprocity

Maine accepts UBE score transfers of 270 or higher earned within three years of the application date. Maine also allows admission on motion for attorneys admitted in reciprocal jurisdictions with sufficient practice experience.

UBE Advantage: Maine uses the Uniform Bar Examination, which means your score is portable to other UBE jurisdictions. The exam consists of the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), Multistate Essay Examination (MEE), and Multistate Performance Test (MPT).

Character & Fitness

Maine requires a full character and fitness review including background checks, employment history, and disclosure of any criminal record or disciplinary actions. Applicants must also pass the MPRE with a score of at least 80.

Key Facts

  • Maine requires one of the higher UBE passing scores at 270, tying it with several other New England states.
  • The University of Maine School of Law is the only law school in the state and was recently ranked in the top 100 by U.S. News for the first time since 2010.
  • Maine has a relatively small bar exam applicant pool, which can cause pass rates to vary significantly between administrations.
  • Maine requires an MPRE score of at least 80 for bar admission.

  4. 4

Practice at least two full-length MPT tasks per week in the final month of preparation.
